FAQ
If your LifeStraw Steel has been used, and is then exposed to freezing temperatures, water inside can freeze and crack the filter. You may not see these cracks, so we recommend never letting it freeze once it’s been used. When camping at high elevations or freezing temperatures, be extra careful not to let it freeze.
LifeStraw Steel cannot remove salt and cannot be used on sea water, ocean water or brackish water.
The LifeStraw Steel is designed for hikers, campers, travellers and other outdoor enthusiasts. It will filter out 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of waterborne protozoa and some chemicals like chlorine, some pesticides and fertilizers. LifeStraw Steel does not remove salt from salt water and should not be used with ocean water, sea water or brackish water.
After every use, backflush your LifeStraw Steel by blowing a breath of air back into the mouthpiece to purge all remaining water trapped within the filter. You can also suck water and then blow it back through the filter. This will help remove air that might be trapped. Leave the caps off until the product fully dries before storage.
When you use your LifeStraw Steel for the first time, both stages of filtration are completely dry (after storing, for example), and it takes a little longer to prime the filter. We recommend that you hold the filter vertically in the water, with the water half way up the filter, for 30 seconds before using. This will help get the membranes moist and make it easier to pull water through.

The flow rate of your LifeStraw Steel will decrease, and then stop pulling water through once it reaches the end of its life. You can increase the lifespan by cleaning the LifeStraw Steel after each use. It is important to change your carbon capsule every 3 months after first use to ensure that the first stage of filtration is working well.
The LifeStraw Steel can filter up to 1,000 liters (264 gallons) and the replaceable carbon capsule should be changed every 3 months.
The LifeStraw Steel removes 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria, including E. coli, and 99.9% of waterborne protozoa, including Giardia & Cryptosporidium. LifeStraw Steel also reduces turbidity, filtering down to 0.2 microns. The activated carbon filter removes some chemicals (like chlorine) and some pesticides and fertilizers.
